Unwanted pregnancies can and do occur. If you’ve discovered you’re pregnant, and you’re not sure what to do, check out all your options and find out who the experts are that can counsel you through what can be a very difficult time.
An abortion is when a pregnancy is ended or terminated. An abortion is sometimes called a termination of pregnancy. The fertilised egg or embryo is removed from the womb, either by taking pills or by an operation.
Sometimes a pregnancy comes to an end naturally. This is known as miscarriage or spontaneous abortion and happens in about 1 in 5 pregnancies, often before the woman even knows she’s pregnant.

How do I get an abortion?
You can visit a young people’s contraception service, a family planning clinic or your GP, and you will then be referred to the abortion service. The service is free and confidential. If you are under 16 the service is still confidential although it is better if you can tell a parent, carer or another trusted adult who will support you through this time. Abortion is legal in the UK up to the 24th week of pregnancy. However, the earlier you can have it done the better, as it is safer and easier. This is why, if you think you might be pregnant, visit a clinic or your GP as soon as possible.

What if I’m not sure I want an abortion?
You will be offered counselling to help you make a decision. This is free and can be provided by the abortion services or from a local counselling service (Oasis Counselling Centre, East Hill, Dartford DA1 1RX 07958 452294 www.oasisdartford.org.uk).
If you are under 16 and you think you want an abortion you will have to see a counsellor.

Is abortion safe?
Legal abortion is very safe, especially if it is performed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. There is a slight risk of infection, which can be treated. There is also a very small risk of damage to the womb and if people have repeated abortions this risk will increase, but it is still a very safe procedure.
Illegal abortion, which would not be performed by health professionals, would be dangerous and should not be considered.

What about my partner?
Some men want to be involved in the decision whether to have an abortion or not, and many will support their partner in their decision. Some men may not agree with their partner’s decision. Local counselling services are available to support men with the process if needed (Oasis service)
In the end, it is the woman’s decision whether to have an abortion or not, and she cannot legally be persuaded by anyone else what she should do
